Stratford firefighters calendar to benefit burn camp, cancer groups

Stratford firefighter Steve Ford is hoping a firefighters calendar that’s in the works will raise a substantial amount of money for three worthy causes.

The 13-month calendar — January 2014 to January 2015 — will feature one Stratford firefighter for each month and will sell for $15.

Ford has been a volunteer for the past several years with Burn Camp for Kids in Ontario (BUCKO), a camp held every August for burn survivors ages seven to 17 who have spent time recovering in a burn unit.

A number of fire departments across Ontario contribute to the charity and Ford said he wants to do something for the camp.

Returns from sale of the calendars will go as well to the breast cancer support organization Braz for the Cause and to Movember, the fundraiser that supports Prostate Cancer Canada.

Photography for the full-colour calendar is being handled by Maaike Roosendaal of Brilliant Images in Sebringville. Several of the photos are being taken at Factory 163, the arts co-operative on King St.

The plan is to produce 1,500 of the calendars and for all revenue from sales to go to the three chosen charities. Advertising is expected to cover production costs.

The last time Stratford firefighters put together a calendar was in 2007, said Ford, who has been with the department 13 years.
